January 4 - 8, 2016 Mrs. Carroll

Happy New Year, everyone!  I hope you and your families had a wonderful time over the holidays.  From all reports, second and third graders enjoyed every minute!  Mrs. Annison  and I appreciate the great Christmas Party that you parents provided.  Everyone had fun and loved sharing the time together.

We have completed the first semester of  the Superkids program and are beginning the "red' book and workbook.  In spelling, the focus will be on Memory Words which will be more challenging.  Continue to practice the spelling words every night - not just a quick review before the test! This week the words all end in the suffix -full.  Please look for the spelling list that came home with the students today.

In Literature, we have started Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This classic is the first in the familiar series.

Next week we will start practicing cursive handwriting - a little bit at a time, working on techniques for forming letters correctly.  As always, I expect students to take pride in handwriting and put forth the effort to write correctly and neatly.

In Bible, we are learning about five genres of psalms, as written mostly by David:  praise, lament, confession, thanksgiving, and imprecation (retribution to enemies!)  We will read examples of each kind, and journal/illustrate them in our "prayer books.'

In History, we will learn more about Hatsheput, "the Woman Who Was King" from 1473-1458 B.C.
