This week (Tuesday, May 10) we will go on our field trip to Inner Space Caverns! Please remember to wear close-toed shoes - tennis shoes are the best for walking in the cave. Don't forget your sack lunch! There is a gift shop that students may visit after the tour if they have brought money with them.
We will have our final spelling test this week - you will get your words on Monday and you will have spelling homework as well. Remember to study for the trial spelling test which will be on Wednesday!
In History, we will learn about the fall of Egypt to Rome, including the life of the famous Cleopatra who was Greek but ruled as an Egyptian. In Bible, we will continue to write and illustrate prayers in our Prayer Book.
We will write more poetry ("I Am") and enjoy Shel Silverstein's wild and crazy poems. We will also write a friendly letter.
In Superkids, we are finishing up the book and workbook. We have peeked ahead and are relieved that Golly has been found safe and sound! We will take the final end-of-unit assessment.
Parents, I am available for end-of-year conferences at your convenience. Although the school has not yet received the final Iowa test scores, I can share the results of the latest Development Reading Assessment that Ms. Winegar completed during April. Please email me if you would like to have a conference and we will schedule it.
Big events are filling up the calendar here at the end of the school year - the CCS program is Thursday, May 12. It will be an awesome event!
Last week (Teacher Appreciation Week), we were totally spoiled by all of the treats and surprises! Flowers, school supplies, yummy food, gifts...thank you all so much for your kindness and support! It is an honor and privilege to be a teacher at Christ Church School.

This week in History we will learn about the city Alexandria, Egypt, that Alexander the Great built after he conquered Egypt. He actually built many cities that he named Alexandria throughout the world during his time. We will also learn about some of his important accomplishments, his death due to malaria, and his burial in Egypt.
In Language Arts, we will enjoy writing poetry! Some of the types we will try out this week include biographical "I Am" poems, diamante and cinquain poems. In Grammar, we will practice recognizing nouns (proper and plural). We will have spelling homework, trial test on Wednesday, and final test on Friday.
We continue to read in our Superkids book - this week we find out that Golly has gotten lost from Ms. Gibson's farm, thanks to Baby the Goose! We hope there will be a happy ending:)
Starting this week, we have a goal of writing our spelling words in cursive! Everyone is doing really well - last week they wrote several quotes from Aristotle and Alexander the Great in lovely cursive.
In Bible, we have come to the end of the Kingdom of Judah and we will learn about Babylon and King Nebuchadnezzar.
Please remember to turn in permission slips and $11.00 by Tuesday, May 3, for the field trip to Inner Space Caverns. I do need parent volunteers to help transport the students - I can take three kiddos, but so far, I am the only one available to provide transportation.
The last day of school (whew!) is May 25 with dismissal at 11:45. Our class would like to have a party to celebrate - they really enjoyed the pizza, chicken nuggets, fruit and veggie tray, etc that they had for the Christmas party. How does that sound to parents? Mrs. Hepburn has done a fabulous job coordinating parties for the second grade this year and the class greatly appreciates all of you and the nice things you do for them.
Many end-of- year activities are coming up so please check calendars and emails!
